After hearing such “ridiculous” ideas as placing cigarettes in the trunk of his car, smoking outside and buying only a pack at a time, Brian thought he was hearing a bunch of nonsense, but he tried these techniques anyway and found them to be a lot more effective than he had initially anticipated. From this point he says he was on board and started asking for more ideas to break the habit. Since quitting, his daughter told him that now it doesn’t look like his car is on fire when he comes to pick her up. He has been quit for close to two months now and enjoys the fact that he can breathe better, has more stamina and can walk farther. He gives credit to the Quitline for all the support and also thanks himself for following through with his plan. In a morbid, yet insightful tone he said, “Had I not quit my body would have been in a funeral home with a cigarette hanging out of my mouth as a going away present.” He feels that anyone who cannot quit with the help of the Quitline really doesn’t want to quit.
