How much does AICTP cost?
AICTP is free to you. Your public health department, health plan or employer pays the program costs of the telephone coaching, print materials and online support.
How much does nicotine quit medication cost?
If you choose to use nicotine quit medications, such as nicotine gum or patches, you may be eligible to receive medication for free through AICTP depending on your state, insurance or employer. If you are not eligible through AICTP, your American Indian Coach will help you work through details to find other sources of free quit medication. Contact us to learn more.
Do I need to work with a Coach as part of the AICTP?
We offer an Online Only program with our website and other online materials. However, research shows people who use coaching are more likely to quit for good. Completing even a few calls or online coaching sessions with a Coach could make a big difference for you. Learn more about the AICTP Plans.
How do I get started with AICTP?
Enroll today — it’s easy, and takes about 15 minutes. You can enroll online, or if you'd like to speak to someone to get more information, call 1-855-5AI-QUIT (1-855-524-7848). You can use AICTP more than once, so there is no harm in enrolling at any time.
How do I work with an American Indian Coach?
If you choose the Phone + Online program or the Phone Only program, you will work with an American Indian Coach over the phone. Your Coach will provide up to 10 calls during your quit journey to check in and see what support you need. Ask questions, share victories and discuss slips — we’re here for you every step of the way. Coaches are available seven days a week. Many of our Coaches are former commercial tobacco users themselves … they understand the challenges of nicotine addiction and the specific challenges of American Indians and commercial tobacco use.
What type of training does an AICTP Coach have?
Our caring and supportive American Indian Coaches are among the most experienced in the country. All our Coaches have a college degree or equivalent clinical experience and have completed our Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training Program accredited by the Council on Tobacco Treatment Training Programs (CTTTP). They are nonjudgmental and are committed to helping you succeed!
How long will I work with the AICTP Coach?
Everyone's experience with quitting commercial tobacco is different. The typical AICTP Plan includes up to 10 coaching calls that each last about 15-20 minutes. The calls can be scheduled as often as you like — a good place to start is one call every one to two weeks. If you complete all 10 calls and need some extra support, your Coach can discuss options for continuing. In just a few weeks, you will be on your way to quitting commercial tobacco for good.
What's the point of a quit plan? Why do I need to make one?
Changing any habit is hard work. Quitting commercial tobacco takes courage, time, and support from your family and community. Research shows the better prepared you are, the more successful you'll be. A quit plan helps you map out when you'll quit, who will support you, what challenges you may face and how you'll overcome those challenges. When you do have setbacks, a plan prepares you for them and helps you get back on track. Your plan is an important tool to becoming commercial tobacco free.
Why should I use the AICTP?
The AICTP uses proven strategies and support to help people quit commercial tobacco. We offer a mix of coaching with an experienced American Indian Coach, online resources and quit medications to increase your chances of quitting for good. We help you establish a plan for quitting and meeting potential challenges. We also help you find family, friends and an online community who will cheer you on. Our Quitline program at National Jewish Health has some of the highest quit rates in the country, with a 37% responder long-term quit rate for those who use coaching and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). And, 94% of American Indians who have used the program recommend you use it too!
I tried to quit smoking before, and it didn't work. Why should I try again?
Quitting commercial tobacco is a process. It can take several attempts to learn the best way to stay quit for good. In fact, research shows the average smoker tries to quit smoking 7-10 times before they are able to quit for good. People who use AICTP are more likely to quit in fewer attempts than people who try quitting on their own. If you've tried quitting before, it’s worth it to try again with AICTP.
I face different challenges than most people — can the AICTP really help me?
Everyone is different and will experience different challenges when it comes to quitting commercial tobacco. We've helped more than 1.5 million people quit commercial tobacco with our programs over time, all of whom came from different cultures and backgrounds. AICTP is a program developed specifically for American Indian who use commercial tobacco to address their unique goals and values. Is the AICTP only for people who want to quit smoking cigarettes?
The AICTP is for anyone who uses any type of commercial tobacco product including cigarettes, e-cigarettes and vaping products, cigars and chew. We help people become free from nicotine, no matter what type.
